Impressions: Hanasaku Iroha Ep. 2

Spoilers ahead, you probably shouldn’t be reading this if you haven’t watched this episode.

On “Vengeance is a Staff Meal” we’re treated to a few flashback scenes of Ohana as a child, this shows us how worthless her mother really is, a fact that you probably already picked up on. The things her mother did (or didn’t do) are the driving force in this episode. Ohana has a newfound determination to work extra hard, she wants to show everyone she doesn’t need their help. She can’t rely on anyone. But her efforts don’t quite go according to plan. It’s the classic case of no matter how hard you try—you still manage to do it wrong. This isn’t Ohana’s fault, no, it’s her Grandma’s unwillingness to stop acting like an evil witch and give the girl a break. The breakthrough on this episode is when Ohana puts her foot down and tells Minko and Nako whose boss. Also there’s a writer that causes an uproar about his lost draft, which he claims is the “work of the century” (more on that later). Keep reading after the break.

I find it saddening that Ohana has gone her whole life with no one she can depend on. If you can’t count on the woman who brought you into this world, who can you rely on? The answer for Ohana is no one; she’s alone on this journey for the time being. I enjoyed the flashback scenes with Ohana and her mother; hopefully there are more of them in the future. Making her mom a plate of her least favorite food with the words “I hate you mommy” was pretty hardcore.

Ohana didn’t plan on working, but she’s decided to make the best of this ugly situation. So she’s up bright and early cutting down weeds. Now, I’m not quite sure why she feels the need to scream while cutting the weeds, but hey, it works for me (it’s pretty funny, I was half expecting her to start doing Kung-Fu). I knew her Grandma would stop by and make a sly remark, she’s a miserable old woman, what do you expect? I have a feeling that nothing will be good enough for her; she’s taking her hatred out on the wrong person. It should obviously be directed towards Ohana’s mother.

I have to talk about Nako for a moment—I find her annoying. She reminds me of that shy librarian from The World Only God Knows, please girl, just speak up! Once again, I wanted to yell at my TV. Her shyness makes her a terrible mentor to Ohana. This is why Ohana ends up throwing away the writers “work of the century”.

Minko however needs to just untangle her panties, stop acting emo, and definitely stop telling people to die. If she would relax for a minute, she’d realized that Ohana isn’t her enemy. She’s not trying to get her in trouble or make her look bad. Yet, Minko is too far gone to realize this. Although, like I said last week, she and Ohana will become best friends.

Ohana takes the first steps in making this a reality on this episode, I can’t describe how happy I was to see her woman up and get aggressive with Minko and Nako. She was basically like, this ends now! I’m so proud of her because I honestly didn’t want to see those two acting dumb any longer. My hat goes off to the writers for giving us this scene in the second episode. Yes Nako, Ohana’s “wrath” was more than justifiable.

About that writer and his “work of the century”, turns out dude is a total creeper. The ending to this episode isn’t fair, I want to see the next scene, will he try to grope her like the pervert he truly is, or will he try to explain himself? Yeah, I’m dying to know that answer too, oh well we have to wait until next week.

Wow, I typed a lot. Normally I don’t do long impressions, but I really like Hanasaku Iroha. The production values are stunning and the story is good (so far).
