Nintendo Announces The “3DS XL”

Yup, you read that correctly. Today on Nintendo Direct, Reggie Fils-Aime aka “Mr. Body is Ready” announced the Nintendo 3DS XL. This revised version of the 3DS is a little rounder and features a larger screen, both top and bottom, so that gamers can enjoy their 3D content in better ways. Below are the other announcements put out during Nintendo Direct:

  • 3DS XL will launch in Black, Red, and Blue… and possibly White (not shown in Direct, but easy assumption given Nintendo’s fascination with White)
  • 3DS XL includes a 4GB SD Card for downloads from the eShop
  • Will have a slightly longer battery life as well
  • Launches in North America on August 19th for $199.99
  • ^^ Take note this is the same day as New Super Mario Bros. 2, expect a package deal
  • New Super Mario Bros. 2 will be the first full game to be allowed a download from the eShop
  • New Super Mario Bros. 2 will also support DLC in the future for extended replay value

  •  3D Photo Gallery will be put into the eShop, allowing users to view popular 3D photos and share online via Facebook, Twitter, etc.
  • Pokemon Dream Radar announced, it being a new AR game (think of it as Pokemon Snap 2)
  • Pokemon Black 2 and White 2 are sequels taking place 2 years after their predecessors
  • ^^ Will release in the Fall, English trailer was shown off
  • Many other games shown off during this video podcast (basically), you can view it here

Well, even though I do not have a 3DS, this is rather tempting. All in all, I think I will hold off, but for those of you who love your Nintendo handheld(s), by all means, this may be worth an upgrade. Also, from what I am seeing all around the interwebs, a few people are rather disappointed because of the lack of that second circle pad, only time will tell on that kind of backlash.

  • I’m honestly in shock, really Nintendo, REALLY!? A second circlepad would have made it worth it, but without one this is just a silly upgrade. You’re paying more for a bigger handheld. I swear, Nintendo is the smartest/dumbest video game company around.

I was actually more in shock that they didn’t announce this at their 3DS conference at E3, but maybe it was not as developed then (looks wise). Either way, late night announcements are definitely interesting, lol.

      • I think they just didn’t want to take some of the Wii U’s thunder ha-ha.

  • Bad move Nintendo. Miyamoto said he scrapped this project so after E3 people who were waiting to see if a new 3DS was coming went out and bought a regular one. These people are pissed. I feel bad for them 8( I dont know why Nintendo is being so weird, but i do know that their investor are not happy with it either.

Yea, considering their stocks have been the worst in their history for the past 15 years or so, I wonder how this announcement affected things. It was, in retrospect, a bad move… something that SHOULD have been announced at E3, which when you look at it, was only 3 weeks ago? Yea, you can’t tell me that this wasn’t ready to announce by then.

      • What, you don’t think NintendoLand was more important to the fans?

        • Kaizin514

Lol, I’m sure NintendoLand will be fun for parties, but as a whole, more people probably would have wanted the 3DS XL announcement at E3.

          • In case you couldn’t tell, I was being sarcastic. I agree that 3DS XL MOST DEFINITELY shoulda been part of their press con!
