Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt The Complete Collection Review

I’ve been waiting for an English dub of Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt for a long time (since it premiered in October of 2010). Some anime are tailor made for English – PSG is one of those anime. And now that it no longer requires subtitles to enjoy there’s only one question left – how does the comedy hold up?

Synopsis via ANN: A company of ghosts has moved into Daten City, taking advantage of human greed. Two angels, Panty and Stocking, are sent from heaven to exterminate them—but in reality they got kicked out for bad behavior

Quite well, actually — if you found the original funny this one will have you laughing even harder. Funimation nailed the casting, Jamie Marchi (Panty) and Monica Rial (Stocking) manages to breathe new life into the Anarchy Sisters. The supporting cast is also awesome; Christopher R. Sabat voices Garterbelt (the voice of Vegeta), and Colleen Clinkenbeard and Cherami Leigh voices Scanty and Kneesocks.

PSG is vulgar and I love it. The comedy hits hard, the dialogue will make even the most seasoned sailor blush, and the soundtrack is one of the best to ever grace an anime. Fans of pop culture references will be in heaven, Fight Club, Sex in the City, Ghost, The Ren and Stimpy Show, Phoenix Wright, Night of the Living Dead, Lady Gaga’s hit “Telephone”, and more are all referenced here.

This collection is absolutely loaded with extras, and many of them are dubbed in English. There’s even a behind the scenes documentary about blowing up Papiermâché ghosts. Some anime elitists complained about PSG’s art, but the amount of work put into this series will shock them. Hell, there’s even a documentary about the series semi-live action climax.

But that’s not all – the box art and DVD cases are dripping with style. Check out the pictures below.

The only downside about this collection is it’s DVD only, that means no Blu-ray for you. Although, it should be mentioned that this isn’t Funimation’s fault — the Japanese licensers limited them to only releasing PSG on DVD. So this collection falls a little short because it can’t be enjoyed in HD. Still, this is one of the funniest anime to come out in a long time. Buy it and pray for a second season. (Rating: 10/10)

i was suppose to watch this anime but i could not get past the art sigh

    • It’s a parody of American cartoons. I love anime, but I also love normal cartoons, so I didn’t have a problem with it. Actually, it wouldn’t have been as funny if it looked like a regular anime. But the animation does switch a few times.
