Mixtape Management happens every Monday and it highlights the most interesting mixtape release from the past week. Notice we didn’t say “the best”. While we want to bring great mixtapes to your attention – we will occasionally highlight some of the bad apples.[divider]
Okay — this isn’t a mixtape. I’m going to highlight it anyway since it’s the biggest hip-hop release of the week. This is definitely worth a listen if you enjoyed Watch The Throne and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Collaboration albums can easily come out sounding incoherent. But thanks to its production (mostly done by Hit Boy) Cruel Summer is actually one of the most cohesive albums of 2012. Samples are cleverly tossed in where you least expect them, and pounding bass is often merged with melancholic orchestral strings (SinCity).
Highlights: Clique, The Morning, Higher, Creepers, and Sin City
