Silent Hill Book of Memories (PS Vita Exclusive): First Impressions

Alright people get pumped for deformed sexy nurse heaven (Did i really just say sexy?…ewww)!!! Silent Hill is coming to a sweaty pair of palms near you. What are we gonna get in this new installment of the series? Are we going to see some of that serious classic scare the shit out of you experience that we want? I’ll give you a simple answer….ITS NOT LIKELY. That being said, I want to tell you why I liked the demo even though it’s lacking true Silent Hill mojo.

First of all, I just want to say that I am super excited for this game. I am a Silent Hill fan and have been since the beginning. I even loved the movie (best video game movie ever in my opinion). So why should you go spend your hard-earned wad of cash on this weird looking take on something you’ve known and cherished since you were a kid? Simple answer…BECAUSE ITS FUN!!! That’s right lady and gentlemen (see what I did there). This game is fun. It has some great combat elements that make Dungeon Hunter Alliance look like the polished piece of loot fest garbage it truly is. I’d like to tell you that this game is a loot driven action RPG like Diablo or Torchlight, but I cant. This game is something new. It’s like an action RPG survival horror game unlike anything I have seen.

Combat is nice and fluid. During my first play through of the demo, I played a Gothic chick and found out that just running up to everything and mashing the crap out of Square and Triangle only got me so far. In my second play through as a preppy dude, I played smarter and it was a much more satisfying experience. Enemies require some thought process and this is definitely a welcome addition to the gameplay. There will also be a co-op mode, but I don’t have any details on it. I just know that when you are playing co-op there are certain story elements you won’t be taking part in.

Survival horror elements are present in this game. The fact that every weapon you carry has a limited life span increases the tension. Some times if you break a weapon you will have to tackle two-headed dogs with your fists akimbo. Okay in all actuality we’d all probably rather die than touch anything in the Silent Hill universe but that’s what video games are here for, making us feel like the bad asses we really aren’t…..unless you’re trying to save Scarlett Johansen from these beasts, in which case dig in you pussies! The creepiness of the environments are all there and the sound is superb. Seriously though, I feel that the makers really tried to add some tense feelings to make the experience seem more familiar.

RPG elements are found in this game. I didn’t notice anything like a skill tree system but your character does level up off experience and you get to pick your stat upgrades every time he/she levels. You can also equip relics to boost your stats, so pay attention to whats going on with your character.

Weapons are done in an interesting fashion. You can wield both single-handed and two-handed weapons. You can have a knife and a gun or a two-handed sword. It’s actually really cool. You control your hands with the square and triangle buttons. My only problem was, if you like a particular weapon it typically doesn’t last very long unless you keep repairing it. You can repair weapons but it costs wrenches and in the demo you only get to hold one and that sucks ass. Still once you get the idea of switching weapons every so often you start getting into it. Guns work well and there is a lock on system that helps with not wasting hard to find ammo. You get to carry 4 clips but only one wrench…I just don’t get that.

Health doesn’t regenerate. You need med packs to get your HP up. It’s a pretty good system, however you are limited on the amount you can carry. I am curious to see if the amount of things you can hold increases throughout the game. I hope so.

I have been waiting for a decent dungeon crawler to come out for the Vita (WHERE IS RUIN OR DUNGEON RAPER OR WHATEVER THEY’RE CALLING IT NOW?) and this looks like its the solution. It doesn’t play like any Silent Hill game I’ve ever played but the layout is great. It’s fun and I had no problem going through the demo twice. The story is intriguing even though they don’t give much away at all. I really think this is going to be a fun game and it will do well if people can get past the whole not being true Silent Hill gameplay. Blast me all you want in the comments below, but before you do go check out the demo and see for yourself. Don’t forget to let me know what you think.

Ha-ha, great (and funny) write up Steven! I need to give the demo a spin because this sounds like something I’d be in too :)
